Figs, leather, cassis, blueberries, intense and layered nose, gorgeous, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, evolving lovely, refreshing, nuanced and flirting, a true pleasure. 94

1990 Château Tertre Roteboeuf
APR 15 Ruby with thin brick rim. Figs, plums, prunes, dark fruits, exotic spices, leather and sweet tobacco, some coffee notes, rich and intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, plums, liquorice, leather, camphor, burnt coffee beans, Valrona dark bitter chocolate, long if slightly lean finish. The bitterness slips away after about an hour leaving a more fruit driven palate, quite mature now, seems to be on, or just after peak, but even with top fill, the cork had drawn wine through it, so maybe not fully optimal bottle. Long. 95

Mature tannins, elegant acidity, gorgeous aftertaste. Fantastic wine. 95

DEC 10 Bright ruby with brick rim and lots of sediments. A beauty on the nose, liquorice, cherries, redcurrants, stable and fine leather. Good acidity, ripe tannins, maturing nicely, very complex, a Barolo of a Bordeaux, almost rose petals, long finish. 94

JUN 09 Ruby with garnet rim, hints of brick. More mature, cherries, black tea, tobacco, cigars, cedar and pencil. Very complex and elegant. Fresh, mature tannins, seems at peak to me, fantastic finish. Drink now and in the next ten years, will last longer. 94

1980 Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf
JUN 08 Bright ruby with brick rim and orange hue. Some mocha, again slight volatility, but just enough to make it more interesting, chocolate, black tea, some sweet red fruits, almost fragile body, very elegant, acidity seems transparent somehow, tannins gone, great balance, has this Vosne Romanée feel to it with Right Bank flavours, very intriguing, best 1980 I’ve tasted. Seductive and quite a charmer. (Served with oysters, dinner with Miloute and Francois at Tertre Roteboeuf). 88

1979 Château Tertre Roteboeuf
APR 17 In neck fill. Ruby with brick rim. Scented, truffles, figs, dates, wild strawberries, charming, almost Burgundian nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, anise, truffles, figs, dates, again wild strawberries, beautiful, refined, surprisingly intense. No new wood this vintage. A very special moment indeed. Francois always ask me if there is an older vintage I would like to taste. So I said, yes, my vintage. 1979. Oh, what a good idea he answered, I haven’t tasted in a while. It was my second vintage. You know, we were very poor then. No new barrels. Miloute came and joined in and the two looked at each other with a gentle look, you could tell it was a lot of memories that was rushing by in their minds. It became emotional for all of us. A brilliant wine moment. 94
