Primeur 2018 Margaux



Margaux is never homogenic, and 2018 is no different. The two greatest wines ere Château Margaux and Palmer, both in a richer, riper and bigger style with more concentration than probably ever before. One thing is the high IPT levels but the overall weight on the palate is just different. Palmer, Ferriere and Durfort Vivens, all biodynamic estates lost between one two thirds and three fourth of their production this year due to mildew, and unconfirmed Clos du Jaugueyron lost most or even everything. This is a smaller less known estate with lovely biodynamically grown wines. Mildew in 2018 went viral and if you didn’t catch it early enough, could ruin everything. If you grow organically and biodynamically you will have difficulty killing it off efficiently. Brane-Cantenac continues on its pretty stellar as of late track, Durfort Vivens has made one of their greatest to date of what I have tasted from here, Ferrière definitely so, and Issan as well. Other beauties are Rauzan-Ségla and Malescot Saint-Exupery. I only got to taste one sample each of du Tertre and Giscours and those didn’t impress, but as always with primeur, it might have been the samples. Dauzac has also made one of their finest so far.

Primeur 2018 Saint-Julien



Saint-Julien delivered elegant wines this year in a bit tighter and at some estates, a bit bigger fashion than usual. Some are a bit riper and more fruit forward than you would expect, lacking a bit of the lovely floral and scented notes that the 2016’s had in abundance. These wines are very good indeed, even excellent, but they may not give you the real fuzz, as they should do. At least not just yet. Looking over my tasting notes I would have expected a point or two more from most of these in a truly exceptional vintage for the commune.

2018 Primeur Graves



100 wines from Graves tasted, by far my largest report to date. Most of these (87) were tasted blind. This is the second year I go more in depth in Graves and it is much more finesse and body in many of the wines this year than it was last year. Considering most of these wines cost less than €20,- in wine shops, some even under €10,- and most will age well for ten to twenty years, some even longer, this year you can find some real steals in Graves. My guess is that those vineyards with older vines and/or clay subsoils as well as the in Graves very rare limestone will have had the water resources to excel this vintage. That also means it might be too cold in some leaving slightly green wines. This year was warm for whites yet I am surprised how nice so many of them are. But the whites may have to low acidity to remain fresh for years as some of these can in cooler vintages. Again that is a maybe, just be beware of it if you buy a few cases, that you follow them to see how they develop. A case of most of these are the same price as one bottle of a second growth, so it isn’t really a big problem. The reds are, even with not that big experience with many of these, probably amongst the finest the estate has ever produced. Graves is still a region were €1,- more ex-cellar can mean leaps in quality difference if the money is put right back in the estate, and mostly it seems to be. If you are a savvy buyer, Graves is a place you can get lots of fun wines to follow for affordable prices still. Remember, I am a bit stricter than some wine critics, 86-89 points means; very good wine with some outstanding features. Meaning, hugely enjoyable wines.
