SEP 03 By accident I found a tasting note on the very first Château Margaux I tasted and it was this one bottle together with a 1999 Opus One the same night that made me go from really into wine (I had enrolled to WSET Level 2 (Intermediate Certificate) later that autumn) to totally fanatic about wine. I didn’t even know I had written a note on it. But I remember it very well. Deep ruby with light brown hue. Lots of fruit, tobacco, leather and cigars, cedar, mild, very fruit driven, long finish with lovely acidity. That is what the tasting note says. I gave it six stars and that was the maximum I gave wines back then. It was the best wine I had ever had up to that point.

Texture is perfection, so fresh, mouthwatering with ripe tannins, layer upon layer, starting to drink really beautifully now, but will age another twenty years easily, gorgeous length. 97

After one hour it starts to open revealing tobacco, leather, blackcurrants, roses and violets, refined, elegant and subtle. High of ripe tannins, like silky snow in the mouth, refreshing yet subtle acidity, almost velvety texture, a beautiful wine, opened but not decanted three and a half hours before serving, and still needed two hours to open fully in the glass, and it became astonishing. If you finished it early, maybe a 92, if you waited, and just let it open in the glass, 95 with a possible higher potential. Keep another ten years or more.

Ruby, perfection on the nose, Mr. Pontallier stated that this vintage was so tightknit and tannic that it is only in the recent year or so that it has really opened up and started to shine. It is probably my favorite vintage in the 80's, I find so many of them with a stunning fruit, still very youthful expression with a fantastic texture, this one no different. Youthful, elegant, floral, so complex and layered I'm lost for words. Nothing jumps out again, red and darker berries, some tobacco and fine leather, ripe tannins, pure, and gorgeous length. Another 86 favorite, not quite the Lafite or Mouton, but superb. Served with beautiful deer at Bagatelle. 97

MAR 11 Top shoulder fill, ruby with brick rim. Some cardboard like cork is coming and going a bit, is it a tiny bit of cork? Aged aromas? Disappears, shows up again, still a very good wine. Leather, plums, figs, something earthy and minerals, almost salty, after ten minutes violets appears. Beautiful texture and fruit on the palate, fresh acidity and ripe tannins, elegant and with good length. 89

Fresh acidity, few tannins, red berries, anise, some tobacco, elegant and smooth texture, silky tannins, refreshing, figs and dates, raspberries, beautiful balance, a superb bottle at its very peak. Long lingering red berries, tobacco and dates finish. Served blind. Seamless. With answer in hand, unbelievable, it should not have been this good. Some would probably feel it would be too old. 96

AUG 18 Bright ruby core, orange rim. Earthy, some sous bois, figs, dates, spices, very evolved nose. Fresh acidity, some tannins, light bodied, first it seemed to dry up a bit but got better with about twenty five minutes showing more figs and tobacco. Long. 92

AUG 18 Ruby with brick rim. Anise, spices, liquorice start, then figs, dates, spices, violets, nuanced and layered with air, bright nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, red fruity, figs, dates, elegant, like last bottle it just keeps on giving for several hours in the glass, ads and ads. This is just a touch better than last bottle, long indeed but just not quite as sexy as the 1959 two weeks back. 98

1961 Château Margaux

MAR 11 Finally! I read about this wine probably ten years ago, and hoped it would someday come my way. It was described as the last great wine of the old dynasty of Ch. Margaux, and it has kept an intriguing allure for me ever since. Worryingly low fill!? Just above mid shoulder, ruby wit thin orange rim. Staring out with intense floral notes, violets, blackcurrant's, plums, cigar, tobacco, perfumed, seductive and flirting, with another ten minutes, licorice, layers upon layers. Very elegant body and texture, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, beautiful balance, enormous elegance, after two hours gaining in body, getting more fruit, turns out the low level can't have had any negative influence, it’s difficult to believe there can be a much better bottle, after even more time, mint, eucalyptus, opens up hugely, enormous complexity, rose-garden, figs, long and elegant finish. Getting even better after five hours. 97

JUL 18 Ruby core, brick rim. Scented, figs, dates, spices, exotic, floral, violets, nuanced nose, incredible nose on this, tobacco and truffles, some sous bois. Fresh acidity, few and velvety tannins, delicate, nuanced, soft and gentle yet layers. Superb wine, what a beauty. 100

JUL 18 Ruby core, brick rim. Some tobacco, figs, dates, elegant violets with more air, morellos and cigars, not quite as open as the 53 besides it, tighter and deeper somehow. Fresh acidity, few tannins left but those there are noticeable, blueberries, figs, dates, tobacco, long finish. Impressive over outright sexy. 95

Delicate earthy nose with a touch of violets at first, more tobacco, touch of cedar, figs, dates, truffles, just layers of elegance, this is a wine you can smell for ages. Fresh acidity, hardly tannins left, red fruits, lighter bodied, figs, dates, touch sweet and sour, just wafts you away, superb wine, WOW! 98

MAR 11 It's always very special to try a wine from 1945. Again, a bit worried about the mid shoulder fill. Ruby, with brick rim, very mature, leather, apples, plums, takes about ten to fifteen minutes before the floral and violet notes arrive, figs, fine black tea, think the tea department at Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly, some volatile high-notes in the back, not quite the 61 but a beauty. Minerals. Fresh acidity, elegant texture, ripe tannins, elegant body as well, not too intense on the palate, all about layers and elegance, not power and fruit, long finish. 93

1934 Château Margaux

MAR 11 What a beautiful vintage this is! Mid shoulder fill, garnet all over. Floral from start, pure, violets, leather, more intense, prunes, figs, butter and animal fat, this one quite open from the start. Rich mouth-feel and texture, fresh acidity, ripe tannins that are very well mannered, refreshing, elegant, this is more difficult to describe, but pure comes to mind together with enormous complexity and freshness, fantastic length, minutes after minutes. 98

MAR 11 High shoulder fill, very light color through the bottle. Pale amber in the glass, acetone, caramel, nuts, enormous volatility, and in the back ground a Madeira Boal, very fresh acidity.

JAN 13 Mahogany red- brown. Tobacco, leather, figs, fine leather, cedar, light citrus flower note, black tea, cherries, stunning nose. Fresh acidity, tiptoeing on the palate, tannins more or less gone, soft and velvety texture, elegant, detailed, lovely balance, refined and long. 98

MAR 11 Mid shoulder fill, ruby with thin brick rim. Tobacco, cigars, spicy, cedar, compact, licorice, needs a lot of time to open, coffee, caramel, tea, citrus, after two hours some floral notes in the back. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, intense, elegant texture, does not give that much on the palate at first, again after two hours, magnificent fruit, superb balance and exceptional long finish. After four hours, even more elegant fruit, pure violets, even more refreshing in the mouth, better body and texture, a magnificent experience, perfect balance, and it sat in the mouth until the next morning. 98
