APR 19 65CS 15M 17CF 3PV Ruby. Blueberries, anise, spices, denser, ripe, dark fruity, a richer and fuller bodied nose than usual for Calon. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, anise, dark fruity, spices, liquorice, intense, some alcohol is evident behind, unusually dense and dark fruity, long. Hopefully only the vintage and not some effort to make a new big style. Those that didn’t really love Calon for its purity will probably adore this vintage, for the classic Calon lover, I’m not so sure. 94-96

Gorgeous intensity and freshness, superb if more intense texture, mouthwatering before turning into a very subdued and elegant aftertaste, very long indeed. 95

DEC 14 Served blind. Ruby, garnet rim. Dark chocolate, earthy, lacks fruit on the nose. Drying palate, dusty and coffee. I guessed tired Bordeaux. With answer in hand a far cry from optimal bottle.

MAR 13 Fill barely half a centimeter below cork. A bit shut and plummy, but after ten minutes in decanter, fragrance extravagance. This bottle makes Armand Rousseau's Chambertin look like a shy schoolgirl. Every red and dark berry there is in abundance, so floral and extrovert, leaps out of the glass, you smell it from half a meter away. Fresh acidity, tannins soft and velvety. Astonishing refinement and a huge surprise. But then again, my experience with Calon is quite limited. It could have been longer considering the nose and palate, but what a wine. Clear as a cold winters day. Pure as few. After three hours, cedar, pencil shaves and something I have found in Calon before, a slightly salty minerality. 95

JAN 07 Ruby, broad brick rim. Some figs, minerals, leather, prunes, lovely nose, old leather, moth balls notes, old wardrobe nose. Fresh acidity, some tannins, leaner body than expected from that nose, figs, dates, bit sweet and sour with a raisiny mid palate bordering on sweet, long. Superb wine. 97

1945 Château Calon-Ségur

NOV 08 Bottle with very bad label, vintage is 945 and Calon, seems to be Danish bottling. Upper mid shoulder fill. Only cost dkk 450,- in a shop in Copenhagen. Colour bright through the bottle. Cork in pieces. Garnet with brick rim. Red berries, figs, dates, earthy, tobacco, scented, even salty minerals and mint on the nose. Fresh acidity, some tannins left, figs, dates, soothing cool feel, After Eight that whiffs off, lovely balance, very long. Superb old wine. 96

1934 Château Calon-Ségur

AUG 07 Mid shoulder fill, soaked cork coming out in pieces. Orange with ruby core. Tobacco, leather, salty toffee notes nose. Fairly intense if not too complex. Fresh acidity, no tannins, soothing, salty butter scotch and figs, lean finish, earthy. Not quite sure if I like this, different at least. 90?

1928 Château Calon-Ségur

NOV 08 Upper shoulder fill, signs of old seepage. Starts out lean and austere,  both on nose and palate. Some around the table thinks it's dead. But slowly it gets some dried fruits, faint roses touch, then mint and leather. Very light and filigree. Palate follows up more or less the same way, seems more Burgundian than Bordeaux. Very light and delicate. Very charming, not that complex, how to score this one? 93 for quality, 97 for experience.
